The Streets That Raised Us is a coming-of-age story centred on a bright young boy, Quadri, whose transition into senior secondary school marks the beginning of a harsh awakening to the realities of family, friendship, adulthood and life in his neighbourhood.
Raised by a loving but complicated family, Quadri gradually discovers that the people and streets around him are both nurturing and dangerous, teaching him lessons about love, conflict, ambition, survival, masculinity and responsibility.
As childhood innocence gives way to a more complicated understanding of the world, Quadri must navigate the contradictions of a home where affection and violence coexist and a community that shapes its children in unexpected ways.
The Streets That Raised Us explores how the streets can influence who we become.
