Hey guys, sorry about last week. For some reason, the post I had planned got lost.<\/em><\/p>\n

Anyway, there will be a new series in addition to Zoe\u2019s Scribbles. It will be a diary of sorts where I\u2019ll be documenting a new phase in my life. It will involve my life in real time in a new city but the entries will be weekly. If you\u2019d like to read content like that, please let me know in the comments. Thanks.<\/em><\/p>\n

Due to the recent plunge in oil prices, most indigenous companies continue operations and as such, had to close shop. My company decided to acquire one of such companies. I was elected to head the team to handle it and I knew just the company we had to get. We had found out that the company was undergoing some distress anyway and my company bought controlling shares in the company. We had started the process of take over and we had to meet with the other company. We got to the company and because we were being expected, we were ushered in immediately.<\/p>\n

\u2018Zoe? What are you doing here?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cOh. Good morning. I\u2019m here for the meeting. I believe your assistant must have told you about it\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018Oh she did. She just didn\u2019t know who she had been corresponding with\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh well, I guess not all assistants can be as good as the one you let go off\u201d.<\/p>\n

With that, I walked away. That was my former boss. The one who terminated my appointment because he found out I was dating his best friend. His troubles had just begun but he didn\u2019t realise it at the time.<\/p>\n

My phone buzzed as a text came in. \u2018You haven\u2019t been picking my calls. What\u2019s wrong?\u2019 It was Tunde. I deliberately avoided his calls because I knew he wouldn\u2019t agree to my plan if he found out. \u201cIn a meeting. I\u2019ll call you back when I\u2019m done\u201d, I texted back.<\/p>\n

We sat down in the company\u2019s conference room and went over the details of the acquisition. I knew it was an offer that the CEO couldn\u2019t refuse because while he made sure he paid the employees\u2019 salaries as and when due, the company wasn\u2019t getting new businesses and whatever money he had left was spent globetrotting. Still, it was more than just an acquisition. It was a hostile takeover and he said so.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand why you think that way but look at it this way. We\u2019re not laying off any of your workers except those who want to leave. You\u2019ve got engineers here. We\u2019ll make sure their skills are fully utilised instead of sitting behind a desk. I think that\u2019s very fair. Just that the name of your company will cease to exist. We bought controlling shares after all. It\u2019s ours to deal with as we deem fit\u201d.<\/p>\n

There was some uproar as the CEO and other top officials didn\u2019t like what was proposed and the arguments dragged on for long. We didn\u2019t come to an agreement and we had to schedule another meeting.<\/p>\n

As I was leaving, my phone rang. It was Oyin and I groaned. I just wanted to go home and relax, not sit and talk with the wife of the man I admired.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey girl. I was at a meeting. What\u2019s up?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018I wanted to have drinks. Are you free?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cNot really. I need to head home and work. I\u2019ve got a lot to deal with before tomorrow. Raincheck?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Yeah, sure. Talk to you later\u2019.<\/p>\n

She sounded funny but I wasn\u2019t interested in fraternising with her. Not after sleeping with her husband. I\u2019m many things but callous isn\u2019t one of them.<\/p>\n

I got home to someone in my kitchen- Tunde. He had a key to my apartment, not so much because he got it for me but because I needed a spare to be kept with someone for me. Alex had one and he had the other. He was making fried rice back when we were dating, I had let it slip that I could do anything for fried rice and it became a weapon he used when he wanted something from me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever it is, the answer is no\u201d.<\/p>\n

The laughter that followed was one that warmed my bones but I didn\u2019t want him to know that. I didn\u2019t know what he wanted but I knew it was something I going to struggle with.<\/p>\n

\u2018You don\u2019t even know what I\u2019m here for.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe, but I know it can\u2019t be good. You\u2019re cooking fried rice for heaven\u2019s sake!\u2019<\/p>\n

After I had changed into something comfortable and we had settled to dinner, I waited for him to broach the topic. He took his time and I realised it was something I wouldn\u2019t want to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cTunde, whatever it is, the answer is no. I know it\u2019s something I\u2019ll have issues agreeing to. So no. whatever it is, don\u2019t ask. I don\u2019t want to tell you no so don\u2019t ask\u201d. He sighed and I knew I won this round but I\u2019ll pay for it later.<\/p>\n

We finished dinner and as he did the dishes, I brought out a bottle of wine and glasses. As we relaxed, I told him about the meeting at my former office and the arguments that ensued. We talked well into the night and I didn\u2019t want him to go when it got too late.<\/p>\n

Besides, I had missed having his body next to mine but he had to go back home and I had to do some work.<\/p>\n
