The hotel was quite close to the office, so I was there when Mayowa arrived, 20 minutes late as I expected, but still there was time. I held the door for her and gave her a hostile \u201cGood Morning.\u201d As we passed Amaka at her desk, I observed that we were on time, then led Mayowa into my office. Amaka being here gave her comfort I was sure. If she only knew.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook Mayowa,\u201d I told her, holding Tomiwa\u2019s case file. \u201cYou made my life hell all those years, so one night seems like a fair trade.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFuck you, Chinedu Nwokocha,\u201d she said hatefully, \u201cFuck you\u2026\u201d Looks like someone was feeling aggressive today.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook here, woman,\u201d I retorted, \u201cWith the love notes you wrote to me, the worst I can get is a query from the bar. The pictures from yesterday sent to Tomiwa will end your marriage before it even kicks off, so think before you act.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seeing her cross her arms, huff loudly, and look away, I continued. \u201cThere\u2019s a good chance that the judge will put Tomiwa on a rehabilitation program, which cancels out jail time, so it looks to me that your \u2018investment\u2019 in me is about to pay off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayowa stared at me, and almost smiled. \u201cwell, maybe there is a bright side to this charade,\u201d she remarked, \u201cSo it\u2019s over?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s head to court\u201d was my only response.<\/p>\n

At the hearing, the judge directed Tomiwa into a rehabilitation program and he was to engage in community service for three months, which was good news for all. He shook my hand vigorously, thanking me, and repeatedly apologized for the past. The bailiff came and took David off for his paperwork processing.<\/p>\n

Mayowa was seated on the first row, just behind me, so I turned my chair to face her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt IS over.\u201d She beamed. Her statement referring to much more than the hearing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, not quite, \u201c I responded. \u201cRemember, the judge specified that he will have to complete his rehabilitation and then proceed to community service. Let\u2019s not count our eggs before they\u2019re hatched my dear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is over!\u201d Mayowa replied, hissing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, perhaps.\u201d I replied. \u201cOne other thing I had not mentioned. Tomiwa\u2019s lawyer would have to sign on the bi weekly report from his rehab program, so you still need me. Now I learnt that after all these years, you and Odunayo are still close, even after that whole prom-thing. Now just because you didn\u2019t get caught with drugs doesn\u2019t mean you aren\u2019t doing them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what if I do?\u201d Mayowa asked, \u201cI\u2019m not on trial.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, but I know Odunayo, your cousin, does them too.\u201d I responded, \u201cSo here is what you\u2019re going to do. I want you to give he police Odunayo Mobolade; you are going to set her up, and you are going to make it easy for them. Then, you\u2019re going to direct Odunayo to see me.\u201d I finished with a knowing stare.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod!!!! You\u2019re crazy!!!! Why the fuck would I do that, to my cousin?\u201d Mayowa said indignantly.<\/p>\n

I smiled as I could see Tomiwa coming down the hall towards us, cops in tow. \u201cIn 2 weeks, Tomiwa will need my signature, remember? I\u2019m going to stretch someone\u2019s asshole that night. The choice between yours or Odunayo\u2019s is completely up to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old saying that Revenge is a dish best served cold has never been in doubt.<\/p>\n

Two weeks later, my black AMG G 63 SUV pulled into the same hotel.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all swear, Odunayo\u201d I cut her off. \u201cand you can\u2019t change what happened, so stop dreaming. Let me know if you\u2019re not down for this and we\u2019ll let you take your chances with the regular lawyer, or better still you can pay my standard rate of ten million naira, oh let\u2019s not forget the consultation fee of N500k.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked out the window for a moment and took a deep breath. \u201cI don\u2019t have that kind of money,\u201d and with a tear rolling down her cheeks, she finished by adding \u201cSo let\u2019s go.\u201d<\/p>\n
