When I saw the name on the court document, followed by a meeting notice from Amaka, my Paralegal, I looked over it to be sure. It was Tomiwa Adegorite on the document, & Mayowa Lawal wanting to meet. You must be wondering who these people are. Let\u2019s start with who I am. I am Chinedu Nwokocha, and I am a criminal defence lawyer with over 15 years of experience at the bar.<\/p>\n

Aside being a rising star in the legal profession, I have built quite a reputation when it comes to defending my clients, having crushed the competition in several cases. Due to my record at the court, I had begun to get a lot of exposure and I enjoyed every bit of it. For those of you who watched the series Power, I was a mix of James Proctor and Davis MacLean. Needless to say, I was a beast in the courtroom.
\nI am 6ft tall and well built, had my own legal firm and active social life, and my specially tailored suits helped me make a good impression. But this wasn\u2019t always the case.<\/p>\n

Growing up, all the way through school, I was a nerdy kid. I had those thick round glasses and a round figure that made me get picked on a lot at school, and my main tormentor was Mayowa Lawal. Mayowa was absolutely stunning, even as a child. We lived on the same street, and I had a crush on her back in secondary school, and she knew it.<\/p>\n

All the way through school, she had her way with boys, then guys and now, as adults, men. She was skilled at making men do her bidding. The only attention I got from Mayowa was when it came to being a bully. She body-shamed me at school & on the school bus; she got boyfriends & random guys to turn against me in school. Her boyfriend in school was Tomiwa Adegorite, the guy whose attention every girl craved, and every guy wanted to be friends with, and he was particularly rough on me. She, & Tomiwa, made my high school days, hell on earth.<\/p>\n

After graduation, I lost track of where my schoolmates were & I never went to reunions, what was the point? To get picked on again? After graduating from the university and law school with a first class, I was lucky to get admission to Havard Law School. I worked hard to become not just a lawyer, but the best and most feared, and so far, I have been very successful.<\/p>\n

I also hit the gym and over the years transformed myself into this sexy hunk of a man I had become. Now, in our late 30s, my paralegal, who coincidentally as my high school junior had told me that a certain Mayowa Lawal was calling and had requested to speak with me. I told her to set an appointment for today.<\/p>\n

The thought of it made me do something very out of character, something I never did in court or even for magazines who I granted interviews\u2026 I smiled.<\/p>\n

Entering my law firm\u2019s conference room, I played nonchalantly. It was not hard to see that, despite the years that had rolled by, Mayowa was, if anything, even more attractive. I was ready for this and had time to steel my nerves. Thinking of her just as I did with any other client, I kept it cool and professional.<\/p>\n

\u201cOK. So from what I am seeing here,\u201d I said to Mayowa,<\/p>\n

\u201cTomiwa got arrested for possession of drugs, hmm.\u201d Swinging my pen between my fingers, I said, \u201cIt\u2019s okay, Miss Lawal, just answer, has he ever been to rehab?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayowa responded, \u201cNo, he hasn\u2019t gone yet, even though the court ordered he did the last time this happened.\u201d Putting her best sad face on, in her best pleading voice, she continued,<\/p>\n

\u201cChinedu\u2026I know we were mean to you\u2026I know I have no right to ask,\u201d Mayowa said, keeping her arms under her breasts to show as much cleavage as possible,<\/p>\n

\u201cbut I love Tomiwa, our wedding is just two weeks away. Chinedu, we need you, and if anyone can help us, it\u2019s you.\u201d And finished with a melodramatic, well-timed sniffle as she cast her eyes downward.<\/p>\n

I pursed a smile. \u201cOkay, Miss Lawal\u2026\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCall me Mayowa\u201d she replied meekly, trying to set the hook.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay then, Mayowa\u201d I responded. \u201cSo, a regular lawyer would only be able to negotiate a reduced jail time for him, but I am after all not a regular lawyer. I\u2019m sure my reputation precedes me. My normal rate is N500k for consultations and N10m\u00a0 professional fees. I know you both clearly cannot afford me, so I am going to do this pro-bono; I like to occasionally give back to society.\u201d I said with a smug.<\/p>\n

I could tell by Mayowa\u2019s body language, she thought she had me. \u201cSo Mayowa, I think you\u2019ll agree that with a regular lawyer, you are fucked. I mean, Tomiwa is looking at real prison time here. I\u2019m talking years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I know.\u201d She responded. \u201cDo you think you can prevent that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it\u2019s going to be tough given his past record,\u201d I said. \u201cSo, if I decide to help you, I am sure there is a way Tomiwa could get just community service\u2026\u2026if I decide to help you two.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayowa\u2019s face looked sad, \u201cWha-What do you mean, if?\u201d she asked, looking confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said if, and I meant if,\u201d I responded. \u201cYou both made a fool of me over the years. I still have a scar on my right temple where Tomiwa injured me, and that your friend that stood me up on a date I already paid for, uhhmmm yes Odunayo. Well, I guess it was \u2018fun\u2019 for you guys to torment me, but for me, not so much. If you can tell me why I should help, I am all ears.\u201d Now I was one with the smug look.<\/p>\n

Mayowa was clearly lost for words. \u201cLoo-look Chin\u2026\u201cshe said, \u201cOdunayo is my cousin, bu-but she decided that date thing, not me. Then in a condescending manner, she tried,<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re the one that took-\u201c<\/p>\n

I cut her off with a slap of the table \u201cNo ,you look Mayowa\u201d I responded in a harsh tone, \u201cYou just say one more stupid thing, and I\u2019m done here, and you can take your chances with another lawyer, alright?\u201d<\/p>\n

I let that sink in a second, and then I finished with \u201cI know Tomiwa told you to each out to me, how do you think he\u2019ll feel when he realizes you let him down? You might have to take lunch to him in prison for a couple of years\u201d.<\/p>\n

For the first time in my life, for a moment, I saw fear in Mayowa Lawal\u2019s eyes. Apparently, that last remark struck a nerve. It didn\u2019t matter though. If the last 15 years in law practice had taught me anything, it was that without great risk, there was no great reward. Mayowa clearly needed me, so I pressed on. Her look made me instantly hard.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh\u2026.okay then.\u201d She finally spoke. Inhaling deeply and looking down her nose at me, she said \u201cI get it. You want something. You want me to bed you? Shed a tear or two\u2026or three? If it\u2019s money you want, Tomiwa & I won\u2019t have it, we\u2019ve spent a lot on our wedding already, so what do you want?\u201d Mayowa said as she looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo darling, I don\u2019t need your money.\u201d I responded, waving my hand as I got up and started walking slowly towards her, \u201cand you don\u2019t strike me as the type to beg for mercy. So, if you really love Tomiwa like you say you do,\u201d I stopped just in front of her in a way put my erection close to her face, \u201cit looks like you\u2019re going to get the opportunity to prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayowa looked up at me, for a moment her jaw literally hanging open. \u201cYou-\u2026You can\u2019t mean\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t?\u201d I shot back. \u201cYou just say no, and I\u2019ll be more than happy to recuse myself from this. Remember my reputation is what made you call me, so if I recuse myself, you\u2019ll be lucky to get an attorney that is half as good as me.\u201d Picking up my phone and iPad from the table, I added \u201cYou know, that\u2019s actually not a bad idea, it was nice meeting\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, please wait!!\u201d Mayowa exclaimed. She had actual tears in her eyes now. \u201cChinedu, please help us\u2026please\u2026.\u201d This was a good sight, I thought. But not enough to make up for the pain she and her stupid husband caused me all those years.<\/p>\n

I pretended to leave when I heard her meekly say,
\n\u201cOkay\u2026..okay\u2026\u2026..I\u2019d do whatever you want\u201d so I stopped. I was no fool here, I knew she\u2019d screw me over the first chance she got, so I went to my office and got a pen and paper, handed her the pen and paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s more like it,\u201d I said. \u201cNow, write the following, \u201cHad so much fun with you earlier, can\u2019t wait to spend my life with you. Looking forward to tonight\u2026M\u201d. I took her phone, saved my number on it, and told her to send me a WhatsApp voice note detailing how Tomiwa had been abusive, and how much she wanted me to take her away from him. Mayowa looked up at me with sad, puppy eyes. I smiled and pointed at her phone. You do this and we are good, OK? I\u2019ll let you get started while I step out and make a call.\u201d<\/p>\n

I gave her a few minutes, then stepped in. \u201cOkay Miss Lawal, we would go to the station to see Tomiwa in a few minutes but let\u2019s make sure you are really on board, stand up & turn around.\u201d I said, \u201cPull up your blouse and take off your bra. I am told the DPO has closed for the day and considering it\u2019s already 6.30 pm, they are likely to keep you overnight, your bail hearing will be tomorrow morning. That will actually give me some time to come up with a plan. I am pretty sure I have a way to work this, but know this, after your wedding, you would have to put in for a rehab program. It\u2019s either that or jail, and you are looking at real-time. Are you cool with that?\u201d<\/p>\n

David nodded and agreed. I gave him some time with Mayowa. As they were in there talking, I made a call, I needed to sort out a few things for my date with Mayowa that night. When I stepped into the room to finalize our discussion, David\u2019s calm demeanour told me that Mayowa must have gone along with the plan. I informed Tomiwa that his chance at making bail was 50% but I would surely get him out one way or another.<\/p>\n
