This unfortunate accident doesn’t typically happen so much, but it has better chance of happening when the erect penis is bent during sex, whacks from a tennis racket or other blows can damage it as well, Dr. Zhao says.

“Penile fracture usually requires emergency surgery,” says Dr. Zhao, who is an expert in trauma. “Most patients will recover completely though there’s a chance of erectile dysfunction.”

If the surgery isn’t done immediately, the penile fracture can lead to curvature of the penis known as Peyronie’s Disease, says Dr. Zhao. This is one of the popular causes of painful sex in men. “It’s usually due to plaque, which is like scar tissue, inside,” he says.
